| | Currently Westlife By Westlife More Than Words... one of D's songs that I really like actually. see related | Confession: I think I may one of about ten girls my age who hasn't read Twilight yet. I've heard mixed reports - most people I know who have read it loved it (from D's siblings, who are slightly obsessed with the series, to older girls, including literalist_fiend, and she usually has good taste in books....), but my English teacher friend thinks it has too little good writing and too many adverbs and poor metaphors and unexplained impossibilities (though she does think the movie was interesting and well-done), and I trust her opinion too. Like Harry Potter, I think I want to read at least the first book to figure out what I think. Who knows? I ended up loving HP... ::shrug::
So, D and I were at the bookstore and I decided to glance at it while he checked out. I got through about... 7? 8? pages before he called me away, and thought it was fairly interesting but not can't-put-it-down material. The writing wasn't amazing, but I think about average for a teen book. I'd read the rest if I had time, nothing else pressing to read, and could find it for cheap used (hah!! not likely.) or for borrowing.
The next day, we went to our local farmer's market (remind me to write about that later - it's mucho fun!), which takes place in the downtown area in which Coaz resides. Coaz reminds me of Powell's bookstore in Portland, Oregon (?) - a lovely rambling place to get lost in books and more books, and it just keeps going on and on. They have a great selection of used books in just about any area you can think of (Amish quilting? Mystery? Politics? Totally unrealistic romantic novels? :p) and I love spending the afternoon there while D's at work. My only critique is that they need more Chesterton, Pratchett, and Wodehouse. Anyways, as we were getting back into our car to head off, I spotted one page that had fallen out of ... something; it was the standard paperback size so it could have been anything really. I picked it up out of curiosity and read through the page-and-a-not-even-a-quarter-page of text (from pages 7-8, if I remember correctly?).
By the end, I was hooked, and much more interested in the characters and story than I was after reading the 7-8 pages of Twilight, and wouldn't mind finding and reading the rest of the book!
Hmmm. That doesn't bode so well for Twilight in my mind..... | | |
| I ran across this quote on CJ Mahaney's blog interview of David Powlison (which was simply fascinating to read, btw), and since it's too long to post on a facebook status, I'm posting it here.
“Those who lack friends to
open themselves unto are cannibals of their own hearts….This
communicating of a man’s self to his friends works two contrary
effects; for it redoubles joys and cuts griefs in half.” (Francis
Bacon, “Of Friendship,” 1625) (part 4 of the interview)
Not that I have near the amount of life experience that Mr. Powlison has, but I've found this to be very true indeed...
And then one other passage that stood out to me.
"On good, lively days, meditation and prayer consistently arise at key
junctures, at points of need, at moments of transition. These living
moments, when Scripture “reappears” in the flow of my day, when I am
consciously aware of both God and current need, are the proof of living
faith, when I am awake to God and to His immediate call." -- David Powlison, part 1 of the interview, empasis mine
I want that. | | |
| C'mon, c'mon c'mon c'mon c'mon c'mon c'mon / let's run away! oh ohoh...
Love Jon Troast's music. If you've never heard it, check it out: http://www.jontroast.com/ I don't understand this song, but I love it anyways. :)
(although the word "c'mon" looks *really* odd repeated that many times.)
Job-hunting. Had one interview Monday that went well - I thought anyways - and several other applications and emails that I'm still waiting to hear back from, mostly admin assistant or receptionist positions (which I really do enjoy). God's been providing, and we did our taxes (federal at least) last night and so that will help some too.
(gahh. I *hate* taxes. Praise God for a knowledgeable husband!)
Housework. It's amazing how quickly dishes pile up, 'specially when the dishwasher is oneself and there are so many good books to read.... :p Hehehe. Been revisiting Sam Vimes and remembering how much I enjoy those books (yay); also picked up a tome of Drew's, about that guy who decided to follow the Bible literally for one whole year. That's been interesting as well - sad in parts too though. And Miss Marple short stories - love those too. But that book is currently still on the shelves of Coaz (the local lovely used books bookstore) until I decide that it really does need to come home with me.
(speaking of housework.....)
Not much else going on. Started watching The Office, with is painfully hilarious at parts but definitely not for everyone. Drew and I really enjoy it though. St. Patrick's day was good, I made ginger melt cookies the other day (like gingersnaps I guess), and I really love the bread from the bakery by Drew's work. ::mmm::
(and now... housework.) | | |
| It's still chilly in good old LC, and the blue-white-flower combination, loverly and cheery though it was, didn't seem to fit crochet hooks and coffee and warm socks and scarves. Or Kleenex boxes and cuddling under a thick blanket... :) What think ye all?
So. "what i posted before" and "the little things in my life." Little things being...
- almost finished with a lap blanket, w00t! It's an easy stitch combination, and dark mulberry-wine colored. - and wanting to start making other crocheted items, scarves, blankets, whatever. I get excited looking through different patterns and wondering, what I could do with that stitch or idea...? - loving Drew's cooking. He seriously can make *anything*! - chats with friends are the best! Whether on the phone or gtalk. It really is SO good to be able to keep up with at least some people from AZ/CO! Tremendously encouraging too. :) - dinners with other married couples are lots of fun too. I'm really so very grateful for N&J, and R&J, and J&J, and hanging out with the wives, last-minute or on a Sunday afternoon. - watching CSI or Jeopardy or Heroes with Drew (or any of his plethora of movies. He generally has good taste, and though he is most definitely a guy - some stupid-humor and a LOT of suspense/action/hero - he likes some chick movies too. He even sat through "You've Got Mail", one of my favorites, though he really doesn't like it. How much sweeter can you get, really?). - homemade s'mores with Nutella subbing for the chocolate bar, yummmmmm! - quiet times - Drew and I just started reading through Romans. Reading through his notes, I'm made aware of how much more he sees than I do, and his logic and memory is fantastic! - Getting to know some of the folks at Vista---erm, Cross of Grace now - a little better. There really are a lot of neat people, and I can't wait to continue building into them! - and of course, being with Drew. He really is the greatest blessing in my life (apart from salvation/God), and I love seeing again and again how well matched up we really are. His care and input into my life, how easily he can make me laugh, his openness with me--and of course his food ;) - I could really go on and on!!
He made an amazing meal for Valentine's Day too (in the interests of saving both money and our hearing/sanity/lives - busy restaurants can be dangerous! - we stayed at home that night). Steak (per my request :), mashed potatoes (lumpy and sooo good!), onion gravy, acorn squash/apple baked yumminess, and ::drumroll:: cappucino souffles!
Laundry and dishes are calling... | | |
| I had something completely random that I thought of at/after/before/sometime around caregroup tonight...
Can I remember it? Of course not. :p
------
So what's going on? Not that much, of interest at least. :)
I'm thankful for roller-coaster days that show God's faithfulness. Glad for a husband who's not afraid to bring up sin - and the gospel - and can make me think and laugh and smile and melt. Grateful for tight belts and unexpected blessings. Love-love-love good friendly I-really-mean-it girl hugs. | | |
